Historic St Aubin - Somerville Hotel
The corner of St Aubin's Bay has provided shelter since medieval documents. A small community of fishermen became established and a market was held weekly, giving St Aubin the status of a town. The tower was constructed on the rocky island for their defence during the reign of King Henry VIII, possibly on the site of a chapel dedicated to the Saint who was held to be a protection against piracy. The English Civil War in the 17th century gave the Island a special role; the haven for ships became a veritable nest of privateers (ships licensed by the King - in exile) whose success brought great profit to their owners.
